The folk law says that in the English town of Rugby, during a soccer match, one young player picked up the ball and started running and all the others tried to catch him.

The game of Rugby Union was born.

The basic idea is that the ball must be passed backwards to a team mate [that is someone standing behind you in relation to the goal line] who then runs forward and passes the ball back etc etc.

In Rugby Union, once you have been tackled to the ground without having been able to pass the ball, you must release the ball backwards by placing in stationary on the ground.

The other team may not [in general circumstances] snatch it away, and one of your own team will pick the ball up and it starts again.

In Rugby League, [a breakaway code that strted in Australia over a dispute about player payment and professional/amature status] the rules are slightly different.

To the casual observer, the main difference will be that once tackled, both teams reset in defensive and attacking lines respectively, and the player who has the ball "plays the ball" by placing it on the ground and quickly rolling it back between his legs to a player known as the "dummy half" who may pick it up and run or pass etc.

The term "dummy half" is not used because he is a "dummy" but rather because his position in waiting for the ball is like a "dummy" or "fake" HALFBACK, which is a player who has the function of waiting for the ball to come out of a "scrum".

Rugby uninion and Rugby league can best be described in relation to one another in the same way that Softball and Baseball have many similarities.

There are two types of Rugby there is Union & League

Union start way before League and i think start around 1800's you get 5 points for a try and 2 for a goal and today it usually played in New Zealand, Australia & South Africa There is usually a tournament played each year called Super 14 Which consist of a few teams from each country (Australia has 3 New South Wales Waratahs, Queensland Reds & Western Force). there is also international England, Scotland, Wales France and many more countries play it

Rugby League started back in 1908 and started in Australia Before it was only played in NSW and only had 5 teams as it heaps popular mores team were introduced, also outside New South Wales and then it got popular in New Zealand that New Zealand introduced a team there is a competiton called NRL it consist of 15 (until 2007 there will be a new team). Rugby League is also played in England there competition is called Super League and consist of 12 teams at the end of the season, well during the off-season each winner from both England and Australia play against each other this is called the World Club Challenge. Rugby League is also an international even America, and mostly Pacific Island nations play the sport

Well i hope this helps you out a bit

Rugby is the best sport ever and it's certainly a man's game!

If you haven't seen the New Zealand All Blacks perform the Haka you havn't lived. It's the Six Nations tournament at the moment and yesterday England beat Wales and today Scotland beat France.

I don't have a clue which country its from, but I do know this: It's not a game for sissies, it's great fun to watch and the best team to have ever played it, is the South African Springboks. We South Africans live and breath rugby.

People in many countries play rugby--Many colleges here in the U.S. have teams and there are many community teams. It is also very popular in UK and Australia.

While I agree that it is the best sport ever, it also can be women!
