Rugby Refs and Coaches what say you?

Question

Today, in state playoffs a fight broke out and the #1 seeds team had a player that ran onto the field with a taser gun after one of our players. The ref decided once both teams stopped fighting that the play should continue.

I say the police should've been called and play stopped and forfeited by the offending team. I'm most sure that had roles been reversed that police would've been called, and, the game would've been called. How can that stand? Our team clearly dominated play the entire game, even with a ref hired by the #1 seeds coach that was CLEARLY biased. It seemed like they were playing "the good ole boys league". It was a pathetic display of behavior of the official and the coach.

What would you do?

In my experience, it would be very unusual for a game to be going along well and suddenly have a breakdown of any major sort, much less anything even remotely such as you describe. There must have been a breakdown of discipline that progressed, and if that was not controlled by the referee and her/his assistants working with the captains and coaches, then all the "grownups" in this failed. Apparently this was a youth or schools game, so there is plenty of blame to pass around for many, perhaps most of the adults involved. The referee has major issues to answer for, but so do both coaches, I'll warrant, and perhaps others: school or league officials, parents, ... Be careful about charges of corruption between a coach and an on-field official. If you have no legally-defensible evidence of this, you are treading on thin ice.



That said, the referee is the final authority on the pitch. She/he has responsibilities for safety as well as fair play. We have only your account, which we must take as read, but it is evident that the referee lost control of the game long before the TaZer incident. At that point the game went from out-of-control to a criminal matter - intent to inflict grievous bodily harm. The game must be abandoned, and if necessary to restore order, the police summoned. The referee would file a written report to the association, and perhaps far up the line of national or even international rugby associations if major bans are to be imposed. [As secretary of a local area union, I once was involved in filing reports asking for lifetime bans on two people who assaulted a referee at the conclusion of a game.]



But in reviewing how to proceed after that, the local union must collect information from all parties, and reach a judgment about allocation of responsibility necessary and sufficient to ensure that nothing like this happens again. That will probably include determinations of problems that involved both teams, prior to this disgraceful breakdown.

I would do exactly what you've said Wendy.



What I don't believe is that the referee actually allowed that to continue, surely he has enough common sense to stop the game after a huge brawl, after such an event the game would turn ugly and everyone would be out for blood instead of winning. That happened once when I was in school, both teams were penalized and offenders were stood down. after that Police were present for each game of the competition.



Regardless of it being a playoff, I think it should have at least been re scheduled and not made to continue, not a good idea and surely I'm not the only one who disagrees with the referees decision.

Running on the pitch with a taZer is a problem, but brawls do happen, even I suppose in women's events. As long as no one was hurt most refs would allow play to continue. I'm assuming no one was hit with the taZer. A formal complaint should be lodged by your team with your union or governing body. Along with whatever supporting evidence you have, video tapes, affidavits from witnesses etc. with enough evidence the other team might have to forfeit the match.
