Signing up for my counties rugby team and never played before but cannot wait. I was wondering how long a match lasts because I looked it up and its apparently 80 minutes and no stops.... How can you play for 80 mins without a water break? Its a high school team so would it still be 80 mins?

High school competitions generally last for two 30 minutes halfs. Senior games are for two 40 minutes halfs.

If the weather is extremely hot the referee will usually stop the clock for a short water break mid-way through each half. There is also (generally) an opportunity for teams to get water run onto the field while a kicker is lining up a penalty kick or conversion. You have to be quick about it, but it generally suffices.

As the length of an actual match -- well if it is a professional level match with the referee actually stoping the clock for serious injuries or consultations with another official, and allowing for a few minutes of amount of extra time at the end of each half, then perhaps 100 to 110 minutes from kick-off to final whistle. Certainly not more than that.

For amateur matches, including high school games, the clock runs pretty much continuously, so 70 to 75 minutes max would be a good bet for your games.

A rugby union match is two halves of 40 minutes each plus 10-odd minutes interval, but each half is extended till the ball shall have become dead, i.e. there is no time left to go based on a scoreboard clock or the referee's stopwatch, and a touch line official, if there is one, may have sounded a hooter, but play will continue until the ball changes hands or the team in possession scores. In practical terms, this could be about 4 or 5 min's, max, to be added on to each half. Sometimes the team in the lead has the ball at the hooter and plays it into touch to end the game right then.

My high school does two 30 or 35 minute halves. In pro matches it's 40 minute halves. My team usually sends in different people for the 2nd half.

two 40 minute halves, with injury time added.

Most school and junior comps have modified times though, here in Australia our under 16s play 30 minute halves, and below that it's 25 and then 20 when you get below under 12s.
