Question:
Am I too small to play rugby?

Hey. First of all, I just transferred to a new school where most of the boys there play rugby. And i find it really interesting. The problem is, i'm 16 and weigh around 100 pounds, and my height is 5'4. Can you guys tell me any routines or things I could do to gain weight and probably some muscles. And is there any suitable positions for me? Thanks.

Hi im a girl and i play rugby as well :) There are a few girls on my team who are really small as well and they play in the game just fine. There wings though! Im a wing as well and its not a total bad position. I mean you basically just stand there and look good 60% of the time...but there are times when your very in the game. Even since your playing on a mens rugby team, wing should be fine for you! unless your a fast runner though? that could boost you up to a different postion. The best thing you could do is talk to the coach about it and see what he thinks! hope this helps :)

Nope not really, yes you could gain muscle mass, play somewhere on the wing or scrum half, and become one of those fast silky players, the only problem is that you could get flattened by giant hench guys, or fat guys. Im 6ft 2 and 189pounds, i play for my local club for the under 13s and every match i play i think its harder to tackle the smaller ones if i have to be honest.

Good Luck dont hesitate to not play, rugby needs all shapes and sizes to make a team

You're a good size for scrumhalf if you can learn some passing and kicking skills. Despite the naysayers, no one is too small for rugby if they have a big heart. You might want to google smaller international players like Shane Williams (Wales) or Peter Stringer (Ireland) for inspiration.

As for putting on some mass, you need to hit the weight room. Basic core moves like bench and military presses, rowing/pulldowns and above all, full squats. However weight training is something which needs to be done right, and beginners will usually need some help to get started. Talk to one of your fitness/gym teachers at school, and they can help you get set up.

you are not too small to play rugby because i know quite a few rugby players even smaller than that such as sam obst you should be able to play rugby unless there is a rule to be over 5'3
